Product Description
This is a very good antique double flue whaling harpoon. It is stamped JT, probably the earliest mark of the important New Bedford whalecraft firm of James and Thomas Durfee. The two brothers opened their partnership in the 1840's. Another mark of the firm sometimes seen is J & TD. From 1858-59 they marked their products JT & Co. as Thomas's son Zoheth had become a partner. The firm shut down in 1859 when Thomas retired. Thus, this iron dates from the 1840's to early 1850's. It appears to be in unused condition with much original black paint, and is unusually long measuring 39 1/2 in. It is about 4 in. across the barbs. Double flue whaling irons are very scarce in the market, especially in this condition.
