This is an acute barbed, improved style, toggle whaling iron with canvas covered wooden sheath and early mounting.  The line ("iron strap") is original and has broken near the socket splice or "whaleman's hitch".  A small section of original marlin remains on the socket.  The two marlin seizings to the pole are recent restorations.   The harpoon is in very good used condition.  American, late 19th to early 20th C.  Length of iron approx.  32 in., oa length 106 in.  

Rarely do we find harpoons on old wooden mountings and with their period sheaths.
