This is a first edition of a very rare and important book. Captain Scammon began his study of the marine mammals of the Northwest Coast in 1852, concentrating on the various whale species, while on a sealing, sea elephant and whaling voyage. There are 27 plates, most from drawings by Scammon, as well as numerous text illustrations. Following the Account of the Whale Fishery there is a Catalogue of the Cetacea of the North Pacitic Ocean with full discussions of the genera and species that are described in the text. Additionally, there is a useful Glossary of Words and Phrases Used by Whalemen as well as a List of Stores unique for a whaleship outfitting for a Cape Horn Voyage.

Original green cloth binding with spine title and gilt image of a seal on the front cover. 319 pages plus Index. 12 in. x 9 3/4 in. Perforated library name on title page. Condition better than usually found for this work.

This original edition is extremely scarce, as many copies were destroyed in a fire following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906.
