Rare Whaling Head Spade

Product Description

14536,6 Hand forged head spade mounted on a section of original wood pole. This very scarce type of spade was used by the captain or first mate to cut through bones when decapitating a whale. They are the heaviest spades as weight was needed to chop through the bone. The spade was wielded like an axe. The pole is branded C.L. FAUNCE. Spade 26 7/8 in. long, blade width 3 1/2 in. oa. length 56 1/4 in. Good condition with moderate pitting. Ca. 1850’s.
