This is a very rare American whaling harpoon patented in 1850 by R. Brown for use in his shoulder gun.The design incorporates a traditional looking double flued head with movable barbs and a triangular lance-like point fitted into a slot at its forward end. There are two holes for lines to pass through near the forward end of the shank which in cross-section has the appearance of a flanged I-beam. The rear end of the shank is broken off at would probably have been a terminal button. 37 in. long. Overall good condition with pitting and an apparent (in use)repair to the tip.
