Unusual Mirror by Aletha Macy (1901-1971) with Reverse Painting on Glass
Although Aletha Macy is reknowned for her ivory carvings, it is little known that she was a cabinet maker as well, and was a protege of Lincoln Ceely. She made this Federal style mirror for which she created a reverse painting on glass of an Anglo-American naval engagement of the War of 1812. There are two inscriptions on the back, reading “To Thelma From Aletha” and “By Aletha Macy Gift to Thelma Coffin”, the second perhaps added at a later date. The bottom of the back side of the frame is signed Aletha Macy. Inside the rabbet edge of the frame, is “Aletha Macy Sanders”, the name she had during a very brief marriage. 24 1/2 in. x 11 1/4 in. A very scarce and unique item.
