Double handled whale blubber mincing knife from a whale ship. Marked “LFJ”; the L and J are clear but the F does not show up in the image. Two purposefully cut notches are on one handle. In use wear. 33 1/4 in. long. American. 19th C.
Knives such as this one were used on a bench called the "mincing horse" to mince the "horse pieces" of blubber into "bible leaves" to be tossed into a try pot for rendering. They are very scarce.
