2697 American double flue whaling iron. This harpoon is in good condition. Mounted in authentic fashion with an “iron strap” and marlin covering on the socket and appropriate marlin seizings to the replicated pole. It is very similar to item number 2696, with less pitting and less evidence of use. It differs in length, with the head 3 1/4 in. wide, length of iron, 31 in. and overall length 93 1/2 in. Another early example of a scarce style harpoon this, with no marks. Ca 1830-40.
Double flue harpoons are scarce, as the industry began using toggle irons almost exclusively after the mid 19th century.
