Product Description

This very attractive antique scrimshaw whalebone busk is engraved, top to bottom, with an embracing couple, a bonneted lady, scene with a giraffe, lion and ostrich, an American eagle with flag shield, and a vine entwined banner at the bottom. Heart shaped top. 13/12 in. long, 1 7/8 in, wide. Two hairline age cracks. American, 19th. C.
The source of the image of the bonneted lady is a wood engraving in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Oct. 1851, p.720.
