14548 This antique scrimshaw sail maker's tool is made of whalebone. The 3 1/2 in. long handle is well turned and scribed with a mushroom carved top. On the blade, or working end, there is an incised 5-pointed star on one side and an engraved star on the other. Three sides and the edge of the blade are grooved and there is an old chip on one side of the top edge of the blade. A fine example of a scrimshaw tool showing in use wear and staining and very good patina. 5 1/4 in, overal length, 1 5/8 in. wide.
