Well Marked Unusual Toggle Iron by Obscure Maker

Product Description

2731 This toggle-style whaling harpoon is signed JC BURBANK, a here-to-fore unknown maker. It is clearly stipple-marked BK FAVORITE and BB for bow boat. The obtuse head is chamfered with a graceful curve to the tail. Original early marlin remains on the socket and the iron appears to be in unused condition. 34 3/4 in. long.

The Bark Favorite enjoyed a long career with numerous voyages between 1829 and 1865. On May 16, 1863 she sailed from Fairhaven for the North Pacific. She sent home 240 barrels of whale oil and 4500 pounds of bone. She was taken and burned by the Confederate raider Shenandoah in June, 1865 in the Behring Strait.
