This British wool work picture depicts a frigate at sea flying her red ensign and commissioning pendant. It is in good condition with slight fading at the edges where it had previously been mounted behind a mat. It is in its original veneered frame with a gold liner. There are minor veneer losses. Mid 19th C. Sight size 21 in x 31 1/2 in.
The making of embroidered ship pictures was a common craft among British seamen during the second half of the 19th century. The Red Ensign was flown by ships of the Royal Navy until 1864 and later was assigned to ships of the British Merchant Navy.
