Aletha Macy Whaleboard with Six Whales

Product Description

2657 Six whales, carved of elephant ivory, are mounted on an 8 in. x 20 in. mahogany board which is signed and dated A. Macy 1963 on the back. The whales: Blue, Sperm, Killer, Finback, Humpback and Right are each identified with an ivory name plate, and an ivory fitting is mounted at the top for hanging.

Aletha Macy (1901- 1971) was born and died on Nantucket, and the board is accompanied by a typewritten note which had been affixed to the back stating that she was a descendant of the first settler of the island. She was a renowned carver who began her career as a student of master craftsman Lincoln Ceely on Nantucket, with whom she studied cabinet-making, painting in reverse-on-glass, and carving, eventually developing and concentrating her talent in her ivory carvings. She sold her work at her popular island shop “Ivory of the Sea” on Madaket Road and today her whale boards are highly sought after and cherished.
