2648 This swing handled oval Nantucket basket purse is signed "B & H  Made on Nantucket Island  1970". It measures 8 1/4 in. x 6 in. and features a wooden plaque on top with a carved ivory sperm whale, ivory handle knobs and ivory bodkin closure. The initials"AM” also on the bottom, indicate the whale carving to be by Aletha Macy. Superb condition with a beautiful mellow patina.  Original owner's name is inscribed inside on the bottom.

Beatrice Booth and Helen Vanatta (B & H) were of the first generation of Nantucket purse makers on the island.  Their shop was on Cliff Road.
