Needlework and watercolor mourning picture, attributed to Lucy Pitts Chase, Nantucket(1802-1867). Very good condition, archivally restored in 1997. Oval, 18 in. x 17 in.
Lucy was a cousin of Eliza Coffin, who was married to Samuel Harris and John B. Nicholson, the 2 men memorialized in this piece. (Twice widowed, she married Leonard Fisher in 1863 and died later that year.) Typically, on memorials such as this, the names of the deceased were written on paper and affixed to the completed embroidery.
