Wonderful Pair of Scrimshaw Teeth by William Gilkerson Illustrated in his Book, The Scrimshander

Product Description

Matched pair of scrimshaw teeth by William Gilkerson. The first is engraved on the obverse with a depiction of the Jared Coffin House on Nantucket and is titled "AT HOME AT LAST TO BE". A small dog frolics in the front of the house, and a female figure is in the doorway. The reverse has two lovely full figure Godey type ladies with parasols. The second tooth titled "AND RESTLESS FROM ENDLESS SEA" shows the "BARK BARTHOLOMEW GOSNOLD 1873" flying a house flag and American flag, and a sperm whale marked 90 BBl. The reverse side of this tooth is engraved with a whaleman in full suit holding a darting gun. The teeth are polychromed and are mounted in a custom oak base with inlaid decorated whale bone border. Teeth 6 1/2 in. tall.

These teeth are illustrated on frontispiece pages of the Revised Edition of Gilkerson's book, The Scrimshander. No. 12 of only 29 especially bound, slip-cased copies of this book is included with the teeth. It has a signed remarqued illustration of the whaling bark Wanderer on the Forepiece. There is also a personal letter from Gilkerson to the owner of the teeth included in this wonderful package.

Scrimshaw by the renowned William Gilkerson rarely comes on the market, and these are quite exceptional. SORRY SOLD
