14360a Exceptional Scrimshaw Tooth with Patriotic Emblems

Product Description

A truly wonderful antique scrimshaw tooth engraved on the obverse with a beautifully executed barefoot figure of Liberty. She wears a helmet with an eagle on its crest. Her left hand grasps an American flag shield next to her skirt and her right arm is upraised with a torch in hand. Above her is an eagle. A banner reading LIBERTY AND FREEDOM wraps around the tooth below the eagle. On the reverse, there is an accurately rendered 78-gun ship-of-the-line flying an American flag. On the edge of the tooth between the left side of Liberty and the vessel there is a monument draped with several American flags. An anchor and pile of cannon balls are between the monument and the ship. Polychrome. ca. 1840. 5 1/4 In. tall with fine patina.
