Antique Scrimshaw Tooth with Whaleship Hornet and Brig Wasp

Product Description

14550 This is a good antique scrimshaw tooth engraved on the obverse with two vessels flying American flags; the New Bedford whaleship Hector and a brig named Wasp. Polychromed. 6 in. long. There is an old chip at the tip of the tooth which does not affect the engraving.

The tooth bears a strong stylistic resemblance and is likely by the same hand as the Hector/Charles tooth in the Kennedy collection. See: Barnes, Clare Jr. John F. Kennedy, Scrimshaw Collector. Boston: Little, Brown, 1964. Pages 87-88.
