This very handsome antique scrimshaw swift or yarn winder is made of whale ivory and whalebone. There are 18 whalebone arms radiating out from whale ivory cage collars at the top and bottom. At the top there is a whale ivory cup on a turned base. A turned ivory section with thumbscrew rides on the whalebone shaft to allow the swift to be set in varying open positions. Another turned section of ivory sits above the ivory base clamp and mounting screw which are wonderfully adorned with circuilar inlays of abalone and 2 eight pointed silver stars and many silver dots. 19 3/4 in. tall, mid 19th century. Tied with newer ribbons. Excellent condition with very minor losses in the collars.
