11189 Insurance Policy Whaling Ship Balaena

Product Description

This insurance policy was issued to John and James Howland for $15,000 for the whaling ship Balaena and her outfits on a whaling voyage to and from New Bedford. The vessel was valued at $12,000 and outfits at $16,000. The policy was issued by the Bedford Commercial Mutual Marine Insurance Co. on October 18th, 1845.

The Balaena sailed for the Pacific Ocean on November 11, 1845 under command of Capt. Calvin Dexter. She returned on November 4, 1849. J. & J. Howland were the managing owners or agents of the vessel.
